Grip Able Handrail Height

 
 

Handrail height, measured vertically from the sloped plane adjoining the tread nosing, or finish surface of ramp slope, shall be not less than 34” and not more than 38”.

Make a note that a grip able handrail is not a guard rail.  See Stair Guard Railing

Check your local building codes to make sure these are their handrail requirements. The examples above are general requirements and might not apply to your local building department so always double check to get the correct building code requirements.

EXCEPTIONS:  Handrails my have starting or volute newels within the first tread on stairways in Group R, Division 3 Occupancies and within individual dwelling units of Group R, Division 1 Occupancies.
