Grip Able Handrail Building Code

 
     
 
All required handrails shall be of one of the following types or provide equivalent grasp ability. The minimum distance from the wall to the grip able handrail is 1 - 1/2 inches.

Circular : 1 1/4“ to 2“ in diameter.
Non-circular: 4” to 6 ¼” around graspable part with a maximum graspable diameter of 2 ¼”

Check your local building codes to make sure these are their handrail requirements. The examples above are general requirements and might not apply to your local building department so always double check to get the correct building code requirements.
